A quasi-mystical embracing of the natural world coupled with a lyrical precision of its observed phenomena is the hallmark of Musings of a Dune Thistle, the debut poetry collection by Australian writer Oscar O’Neill-Pugh. From the intricate root systems of weeds to the creeping progress of a moon snail to the awkwardly-winged beauty of the albatross, these poems are infused with sensitivity and a joyousness in the sheer ‘eruption of life’ offered by nature where even the smallest plant is ‘shaped under sacred geometry’. And indeed, O’Neill-Pugh offers us a world with more than a dash of the sacred, where time collapses in on itself and we are called ‘to take that great and wonderful and terrible leap’ into the sensual heart of nature and ‘dare to embrace it’; that is, open ourselves to it and, further, express it. The aptly titled ‘Words of Power’ – positioned, significantly, at the centre of the book – is arguably the poem which comes closest to a portrayal of the poet’s rationale.
